The spontoon is basically a scaled down polearm or winged spear that often served as a substitute for a rifle or musket in colonial America. Issued in substantial quantity by both sides of every conflict from the French and Indian war (1754-1763) to the War of 1812 it was carried as both a weapon and a badge of rank or authority by commissioned and noncommissioned officers alike. Our president Lynn C. Thompson became fascinated by the spontoon after reading Tim Willocks' novel the Twelve Children of Paris (3 times!) so we decided to make our own model based on historical examples. The blade of our spontoon is 10 ½ “long and 4mm thick with 3 ½' wings on either side. Designed primarily for thrusting its also capable of delivering cuts and slashes while its sharpened wings provide substantial catching and trapping potential as well. Mounted on a stout ash wood pole with a decorative 3 ring socket its appropriate for any Colonial reenacting and makes a fearsome stand-alone weapon in its own right.

We are proud to add this eye catching Germanic-style Mace to our line-up of historically inspired Man at Arms weapons. This modern interpretation of a classical Gothic mace is hand made from 1055 carbon steel. It features a thick walled hollow steel handle, and a weighty pommel to counter-balance the Mace's heavy helmet crushing head. Designed to oppose armored foes, the MAA Gothic Mace features six steel flanges. Each one is profiled and tapered to reduce weight but also add “bite' upon impact, denting and crushing even the strongest plate armor, while the spiked finial at the crown allows the Mace to be used as a thrusting tool. Inspired by historical examples, and modelled after a custom weapon by Bladesmith Dave Baker, our Polish Mace is a masterclass of minimalist design. Unlike highly decorated “Bulawa' or ceremonial weapons, these simple utilitarian Maces were often plain and unadorned, and tucked into a sash or belt at the waist, ready to be quickly snatched and brought into play as a last-ditch tool for personal-defense. Quickly grabbed with either hand, the wielder could use this stout steel Mace to thrust and jab at speed, or swing it to land a heavier (and more devastating) percussive blow. The Blackthorn bush is found throughout Ireland and the British Isles. It has been prized for centuries as a material for premium walking sticks. The original Blackthorn sticks were 2 to 4 foot long Irish shillelaghs (the national weapon of rural Ireland). In expert hands the shillelagh was so fearsome that during the final occupation of Ireland, the English outlawed it. To get around the law, the Irish turned the shillelagh into a 3-foot walking stick. The English didn™t want to appear unreasonable by outlawing walking sticks too, so the Irish kept their modified shillelaghs and the world gained a beautiful and functional walking stick known simply as the Blackthorn.
ColdSteel made the effort to obtain and sell authentic Blackthorn sticks over fifteen years ago, but the venture turned out to be disappointing, and not because the sticks didn't sell well. It was because Blackthorn is difficult to come by and, since it™s grown and not manufactured, it is somewhat inconsistent in quality.
ColdSteel™s recent forays into injected molded polypropylene products has yielded some impressive results and now we have produced a new polypropylene Blackthorn that has all of the advantages of real Blackthorn and none of its pitfalls.
